今住んでいるアパートの敷地内に、ちょっとした中庭があります。
我が家のキッチンからみえる大きな木が、最近はらはらと葉っぱを落としていて、ガーデナーのおじさんのせっせと掃いている音が、一日に何度も聞こえます。庭に落ち葉の一つも舞っていようものなら、親の仇でも見たかの様に、箒をもって飛び出して行く夫の母や私の祖母を思い出します。
この頃は、そんな庭をみているとまるで秋のよう。夕立の数も減ってきて、ペナンにもそろそろ冬が近づいています（といっても、気温は相変わらず３０℃くらい）。
先日は、その木の丸い葉と、３センチくらいの大きなサヤに入った種を夫が拾って来て、木の名前を調べていました。とりあえず、門番のおじさんと、華系のおじさん（←君が代を歌えるというおじさん）に聞いてみると、口を揃えて自信満々に「パームツリーだよ」とのこと。パームツリー＝椰子の木なら、素人の私たちにだって分かります。絶対違うでしょ！
Recently, friends of ours from Tokyo visited Nanzenji in Kyoto. This temple is noted, among other things, for the beautiful autumn colors of the trees that grow on its grounds. Looking at the photo they sent us, I thought about the differences between trees at home and trees we see in Penang.
In the tropics, the seasons appear less distinct and the transitions between them subtler than those in temperate climates. Changes in plant life reflect this and appear less pronounced as well.
There is a large Millettia tree visible from our kitchen window. I have read that there are more than 350 species of this genus. I am not sure to which species this tree belongs, but the tree flowers, those flowers produce bean pods, and it is closely related to the wisteria (It is even referred to as an “evergreen wisteria”.)
Every day, especially after a heavy rain, several hundred leaves fall to the pavement below and are swept up by a gardener. The tree seems full of leaves always, so the fallen leaves are continuously replaced. In this way, it always seems autumn, spring, and summer here at any time the year round.
熱帯多雨林気候のマレー半島には、非常に豊富な種類の植物が生息しています。種分化も高度にすすんで、一種でも多様なバリエーションを形成しているそうです。きっと、身近にそんなものがゴロゴロしている地元の人にとっては、椰子の木だろうが、もみの木だろうが、木の名前なんぞどうでも良いことなのかもしれません。
そういえば、鈴虫やクワガタムシなどの名前も生息地もここの人は無関心のようです。身近に虫がいすぎて、虫を愛でるどころではないのかも。
ペナンの植物園にはおもしろい木が沢山あるんですけどね、、。写真は今年の初めに行った時のもの。またゆっくり行きたい。
